Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of pure essential oils to benefit the individual.

Essential oils are referred to as the ‘life force’ of plants.  They give a plant vitality, act as a defence mechanism and assist in growth.  Essential oils are distilled and extracted from a variety of plant parts, such as flowers, leaves, wood, resin and twigs.

Using essential oils enables us to connect to the living processes of earth and thereby rejuvenate, balance and nourish our mind, body, emotions and spirit.


Important points to remember when using essential oils

Keep essential oils out of reach of children

Never apply directly on to the skin

Never take internally

Keep away from the eyes

Never use more than a total of 8 drops of essential oils in water for vaporisation

Never burn without the use of water

Never leave an oil burner that is being used unattended

Always use essential oils that are labelled as being 100% pure, and that are in dark glass containers and stored away from intense heat, light and moisture

Always consult a medical practitioner for any persistent symptoms

Essential oils to
avoid during pregnancy:  Angelica, Basil, Cedarwood, Chamomile (first 3 months), Clary Sage, Frankincense (first 3 months), Jasmine, Marjoram, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme

NB  Fragrant oils are not the same as essential oils and don't have the therapeutic properties of essential oils.

Allow your intuition to guide you in your choice of essential oils to burn.  An aroma that appeals to you will benefit you.  If you don’t like the aroma of a particular essential oil or if you feel uncomfortable with the feelings that it evokes, don’t use it.

One of my favourite pure essential oils is Bergamot.  I love the fresh aroma of Bergamot and the feelings of comfort and stimulation that it evokes in me.

Aromatherapy oil burner recipes

 

Balancing (hormones & emotions)

  Add to water in your oil burner

6 drops Geranium only

Geranium essential oil is balancing in nature because it stimulates the adrenal cortex, where hormones are produced which regulate the production of hormones in other organs.

Geranium helps to stabilise mood swings.


 

Balancing (mind)

  Add to water in your oil burner

6 drops Lavender only

Lavender is one of the most useful of all essential oils. Its actions include normalising, analgesic, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-depressant, anti-bacterial, decongestant and sedative effects.

 

 

 

Clarity and Memory Enhancer    

Add to water in your oil burner

3 drops Rosemary

3 drops Sage (not Clary Sage)

 

 

Meditation

Add to water in your oil burner

2 drops Frankincense

2 drops Myrrh

2 drops Cypress

 

 

Exhaustion (to ease)

Add to water in your oil burner

2 drops Peppermint

2 drops Lemon

2 drops Lime

  or

2 drops Rosemary

Insomnia (to ease)
