The National Competition Committee (NCC) has just investigated the monopoly Australia Post still has on 45c letters and is looking for ways to make it all more competitive and supposedly a better service for the consumer. Basically they are suggesting that the quickest, cheapest and easiest way to do this is to sack workers - surprise, surprise. Telstra workers have just experienced and still are coping sackings in the name of competition.
Australia Post already makes profits every year and they get bigger and bigger. Why then do they insist on attempting to "fix" something that is not "broken". Simple, it's because they are greedy capitalists who are hoping to get their own private slice of the profits. So in the not too distant future Australia Post workers are going to have a fight on their hands.
The current leadership of the CEPU are a management suck team and must be removed if a battle is to be waged and won for these jobs and the conditions that postal workers currently work under are to be maintained. They would only hinder a truly grass roots mass industrial campaign happening and they would definitely not lend any union resources to assist. The silver lining on the cloud however has shown itself to be the KAPP (Keep Australia Post Public) rank and file group who have recently had good election results getting seven candidates onto the State Council, in Victoria and winning almost 60% of the vote.
This is long overdue recognition of this groups tireless campaigning within Australia Post. The group has been together for over 12 years but also has new workers coming into it's networks. Definitely a union to keep an eye on come election time. Members have shown a great enthusiasm for the ideas of KAPP and are willing to support them. Hopefully the CEPU membership will show itself to be a sleeping tiger and awake to fight in the face of this economic rationalist onslaught.
