No airport in Sydney's West |
SYDNEY: Despite terrible weather, around 3000 residents of the western Sydney suburb of Blacktown turned out to show that Sydney's planned second airport was not wanted in the predominantly working class west. An array of speakers including many from the Labor Party (noticeable mainly due to their silence over the airport while Keating was in power) spoke out against the social and environmental disaster another airport in the densely populated west would cause.
As more and more anti-airport groups spring up to counter various proposals, the need for combined action becomes clearer. Residents all around Sydney must be encouraged to stand up against politicians in Canberra condemning them to this disaster.
The federal government must commence work on a new airport, but outside the Sydney Basin. This should be linked by public transport to all areas of Sydney.
