Note on Jose/Joce
Jane O'Brien has supplied lots on Mary Jose's ancestors (follow the
links). She also commented
You will see that the alternative spelling
is Joce and as the surname derives from the name Joyce I have always
assumed the pronunciation of both names is identical. [I have
seen it suggested that the Jose/Joce family from north-east Cornwall is
descended from a Spanish sailor lost during the Armada!]
Acknowlegements:
Researchers on the Cubits and Chilcotts have shared their work
generously, and I have not been good at noting sources. However, much
is owed to Val Trickett, Sue Royce, Jenny Mitchell and Fred Mitchell.
Sue
Royce is happy to be contacted by email at

I have a
couple of questions for you - You
show John Spettigue the son of Sylveter Spettigue and Mary Swine as
Marrying Rebecca wood which I had at one time but was told I was wrong.
Supposedly
it was John son of Mathew Gimblett and Grace Spettigue who married
Rebecca ( You show this as well and I dont think there were two
marriages shown ) any idea which is correct - my source is sure it is
John son of Mathew Gimblett.
Also I note
that you have Degory Joce maried to a man 9 Phillip Marke) - Should
that be Phillipa or is it a toatl mistake.
