Joan Hunter, descended from
William Chilcott (b 1700 above) and his
first wife, Hannah Henwood supplied some interesting wills and comments
I
have the will of Joan Chilcott (d. 1707). I have felt she’d be a
good fit for Robert’s wife, but even though she mentions Robert’s 3
sons (& Christopher’s daughter, Elianor) in the will, the bequests
are small. The bulk of the estate goes to Weary & George
Bryant jr. I have the .pdf of the will if you don’t have it
yet. Claire Freestone in Somerset is doing a One-Name Study of
the Chilcott name and shows Robert’s wife as Joan.
There is also a
will of Robert Chilcott of
Bridport dated 1684 that
really only muddies the waters further:
Comment Les Rowley
Go with Joan of the will above, but we won't follow
her line till we get stronger evidence. As Joan Hunter says, the
issue still is whether Christopher's father Robert is the same
person as William's son Robert. My guess is an 80% probability.

Mary Chilcott Syms bpt. 06 Sep 1683 in Burton Bradstock, d.o. Samuel
Syms & Mary. (Bet her last name’s Chilcott.)
If the above
Robert were ours, though, one would think he’d mention his sons,
Christopher, Robert & William, so perhaps he’s a cousin. That
being said, there was a marriage between Thomas Fulbroke and Joan
Kendale on 29 Apr 1629 in Allington, Bridport, Dorset. This may
be the Joan
Fulbrook of the above will. She’d be abt. 75 yrs old at the time
of the will.
Coincidentally,
Thomas Fulbrooke had a daughter, Elinor. Christopher Chilcott
named one of his daughters Elianor, perhaps after an aunt?
Speculation, I know.
On to Robert
Chilcott’s parents, William & Mabella. Mablen Bragge m.
Alexander Every in 1626, in Thorncombe near Axminster, Dorset.
Their daughter, Elizabeth was b. 1628 in Whitchurch Canonicorum,
Dorset. She is mentioned in her step-father’s will, as is her
father, Alexander:

(use edit > find) contains info on William Chilcot
1679 and was a Blundell fellow of Balliol
College, Oxford. How is he related Christopher
(b.1665) who attended Oxford
also?
http://www.oldtowns.co.uk/Devon/tiverton.htm
(use edit > find) contains info on Robert Comyn
(he’s noted with the term ‘alias Chilcott’)
who was a nephew of Blundell who began the Blundellian
scholarships to Balliol College, Oxford, as mentioned in links above.
It might explain why Christopher and William attended there. I believe the name Comyn
had a bad reputation politically, so perhaps he used the alias Chilcott. Is there a spilt around the 1600’s or
shortly before into the agriculturalist and those interested in the
arts?
I found the William and Mabella notes on the net, then George Chilcott, Milverton, Somerset, 1560, then William Chilcott, Stogumber, Milverton, same date, then Henry Chilcott 1532. Are they all connected/related?
Notes from Julian Higgins in GR
The name Chilcott
is of Anglo-Saxon origin and
came from when the family were based in the chapelry of Chilcote, which
was in the parish of Burton-on-Trent, in Derbyshire. The surname
belongs to the long list of Anglo-Saxon names which are based on
pre-existing towns, villages etc. First found in Dorset, where they
were seated from ancient times predating the norman conquest.
