PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As you are no doubt aware, the club has invested a significant amount of time and money in the 1999 Super Raffle for which you should have received tickets by now.
(If you haven't already received an allocation of tickets please contact Ross Walker as soon as possible, B: 9596-4722, H: 9530-6415).
I can't stress enough the importance of every club member and their family supporting this initiative. This is our club's opportunity to demonstrate to the Local Council and State Government that our members are committed to raising money to support the replacement of our soon to be condemned artificial surface.
Thanks to those people who have already sold their initial allocation of tickets. To those that haven't, I encourage you to do so as soon as possible. If you have any queries, please call Ross Walker or myself.
I would like to also take this opportunity to congratulate Campbell Smyth and Alison Wright of our club social committee who recently organised and ran the hugely successful M.D.H.C trivia night.
We think the night may have broken a club record in attendances, with over 300 people at the function. Given the amount of positive feedback we have had from everyone that attended we hope that the three remaining major social events will attract similar numbers of club members and guests. Financially the night was also a great success with a net profit of over $4,000 going into the ground replacement fund.

Thanks Everyone.

At this stage of the season the club is in a very sound financial position relative to its 1998 results. In the next edition of Jetsetter we will publish a summary of the year to date results including our replacement savings targets that were set at the beginning of this season.

ALLEN HART
President

WOMEN’S SECTION REPORT

· With the season fast approaching it’s conclusion and the finals series the District 2 side is in a very strong position to make an assault on the finals. They have had a very successful season so far and hopefully will continue to do so. Unfortunately the season has been a bit more of a struggle for most of the other teams but a few good results in the remainder of the season should put most teams back on track. Training attendances have remained good for the whole season which is pleasing to see and I’m sure players are reaping the benefits.
· On the social side there were a large number of players from the women’s section who attended the Trivia night. This was very good to see as social mixing within the section and with the other sections of the club can only strengthen a club. I’m sure a fantastic night was had by all.
· Congratulations to Tamsin Johnston who has been selected in the Victorian Under 21 side to play in the national championships in Darwin in two weeks.
· Good luck to Alisia Simmons, Lauren Stevenson and Sarah Ashworth who leave in a few days to play in the Under 16 national championships in Adelaide.

MEN’S SECTION REPORT

We’ve got to the home turn, and teams are jostling for position for the run home. Most of the Men’s Section teams are reasonably well placed to play a strong part in the finals action. The notable exception of course is the State League team.
After just missing out on promotion to State League 1 last season it will be a very disappointing result to totally miss the finals this season. There are plenty of excuses, absences, injury tales, unlucky games, umpiring decisions, and missed chances to speak of; but at the end of the day the players must take a look at themselves.

Most players are no where near the fitness level they should be at.

  1. The commitment of players to individual improvement is unsatisfactory.
  2. The preparedness of some players to do the extra bit is absent.
  3. Complacency has crept into the attitude of most players in or contending for State League positions.

Now it’s too late for the 1999 season. But it’s not too late to develop an improved attitude, to begin to work on your own game, to restore some pride in the your own performance, and to show some respect for Moorabbin Hockey Club. This not only applies to those presently in the State League side but to those that should be.
That’s the bad news. The good news is the performances of the Pennant and Metro Teams. The real highlight is the Pennant A team, their finals prospects, and the gutsy way in which they are playing. They have had great results against the top sides, and with five rounds left have their fortunes in their own hands – with all remaining games against teams outside the four. This is great news since the club has typically struggled in Pennant A, and has very rarely featured in the finals. It will be great to have some teams to cheer on in September.
I don’t want to take anything away from the Pennant A performances, however, at the end of the day, and rightfully so, a club is ultimately measured on the performances of its top side. A disturbing feeling at the club recently has been for some players to outwardly say that they would rather play in the seconds than the State League team. Whether they actually mean this or not, it is disappointing, and contributes nothing positive to the club. Individual players who feel more comfortable playing in the seconds, than working a bit harder to get into the top team are letting themselves and the club down. I wonder if the same individuals will be looking to play firsts or seconds hockey during the next pre-season. My advice to those players is to have the courage to reach higher.
A really positive aspect of the season to date has been the number of Junior players playing senior Men’s hockey – 17 so far. Particularly pleasing has been the success of the Metro-2 team with such a high proportion of Juniors. I suppose there was always the need to add some pace to this team of Veterans: Finno, Mouse, Beckman and co.
Training attendances have just started to drop away slightly over the past couple of weeks. There is still much to achieve for State League. Pennant-A and Pennant-C have vitals runs home into the finals. We have good chances of making finals in Metro-1, Metro-2 and Metro-3 – so it’s time to start getting along to training again, now that the really cold nights are behind us.
Speaking of numbers – congratulations to those involved with the organisation of the Trivia Night. It was a sensational night, and it was fantastic to see so many in the clubrooms. There were some very strange results on the night, with a television won by the son of the prize presenter, a bottle of bourbon won by the son of another organiser, and a table of misfits winning the trivia competition. For other big news on the night don’t ask Tago or Ruth.

TRIVIA NIGHT

A special thanks to all the sponsors and those who helped support the great success of the M.D.H.C. (JETS) Trivia Night 1999.
Many discussions have taken place as to the number of people that turned up conservatively 250.
It was a great team effort, from early afternoon the clubrooms were a buzz. Excellent jobs in decorating the clubrooms and with the preparation of food thank you to all that became involved.

Congratulations to all the lucky prize winners, our champions for 1999
Table 8 : Lindsay, Tamsin, Andrew, Gus, Jason, Crampy and friends hope you have another great night at the Keg.

A wee birdie told me Brent Scales dropped his parents portable the night before, wasn't he lucky winning the T.V. that saves him a lot of extra paper runs……. There were great prizes to be won and lots of fun doing so.
The revenue was helped along by our resident 'London Bobby' collecting fines thank you Lockie, Bence and David A.(U13A).
The current social committee is simply trying to bring closer the project of a new playing surface.

We should all be proud to be associated with such a great club.
Don't risk being disappointed at our next function book and pay early.

Regards,

Social Committee.

JUNIOR SECTION REPORT

With the season rapidly coming to an end we must keep on working to either stay in the finals race or make it hard for those teams in the hunt.

At the time we go to press our three Under 16 Secondary Schoolgirls Representatives Sarah Ashworth, Alisia Simmons and Lauren Stevenson will be fighting hard for the Vics in South Australia. Good Luck girls. The girls aren’t the only ones flying the Jets flag in Rep teams Craig Hardham will be causing headaches for the opponents of the Vic U16 VSSA, at Doncaster over the next week, Go Craig. The U14 Touring teams are represented by Traleen Neil in the girls and in the boys we have Brent Scales, Ian Smyth, Chris Ciriello and Steve Stuart, well done everyone.
The Southern Sharks trials were completed last week and we are well represented in the U13 Boys by Greg Beckmann, Steve Duffield, Rob Sleeth, David Ashworth, Brett Ziebell and Andrew Johnston in goal. The U14 Girls have Jess Benjamin (c), Crystal Beckmann and Antonio Hempel and Laura Tsindos in goals. The U15 Boys have Brett Depster, Daniel Beaver, Tristan Briede and Josh Heathcote in goals. Well done everybody involved including those that trialled but missed out. I must add that Stuart Campbell is coaching the girls, Justin Wischusen the 13 Boys and Coral Moore is once again doing the 15 Boys. Good Luck to everyone. A special mention to our selectors Rod Boehmann, Adrian Cramp and Stuart Campbell, well done in attending the early start to a Sunday morning.
Last but not least are our three Reps in this year's Primary schools teams. Well done to Stephen Harvey and Stephen Dempster in the boys and to Jessie Morphet in the girls. They are off on the 15th to sunny Canberra for a week of HOT hockey. Good Luck.

Umpiring
Last Wednesday 4th August we had an informative night covering basic umpiring for juniors under the auspices of Andy Wischusen and Pat Shiels. For those who came it was a very interesting night giving players, parents and prospective umpires an insight into the pros and cons of umpiring. A special thanks to Craig Scales for organising this night. I think more of these nights will help everybody understand the efforts and pressure that umpires can be under. Remember no umpires, no game.

Canteen Duty
It has come to the Committee’s attention that some families are reneging on their canteen commitments when asked to by Team Managers. Please pitch in and help because it’s falling back on the same people to cover the gaps in the roster. It also leaves Norma and Gyneth high and dry some nights. We know families have many commitments but you’re not the only ones. If you can’t do it, try and organise a replacement and do you’re bit when it’s convenient. Thanks for your cooperation. It’s warm inside and you still see the game.

Parking
With the Councils Pavilion enhancement program happening (Grease pit shoved next to the front gate) it’s more important to keep parking within the designated bays. So we don’t have congestion, which is happening at the moment. If you want a parking spot close to the gate may I suggest you become President or Secretary.

Committee
With the season end looming it is important to consider next year. Some committee members are retiring and will need to be replaced. If you don’t want the Junior section of the club to slide into trouble some parents will have to put their hands up to fill the committee. There have been some people not happy with the way the club has been run this year – Well this is your big chance to do something about it. Put your hand up and nominate to go on the Committee. Any questions or queries can be directed to current committee members.

Under 13 Girls
From what has been a very difficult year for the girls, I have got great admiration for the way they never give up trying and keep training and working on improving their game. We have had a shocking run of injuries and the girls with other commitments have left us short of players but the girls keep battling and chatting, boy do they keep chatting!
Mary has taken up the challenge in goals and is definitely improving every week. Jess Naughton is also getting more confident at full back creating many opportunities for Lauren B., Emily and Jess M. Our forwards are now starting to control the ball and pass off, so well done Alice, Laura, Lauren G and Justine and Stacey. The two I haven’t mentioned are Mallory, back (that’s not position, that’s sore back) and Jo who is having some knee problems. Get well soon girls.
Remember girls win a game and the moustache comes off!!!!

Junior Presentation Night
This year’s Presentation night will be held at the club on Friday 1st October. This is the last weekend of the school holidays so make sure you are back from your trips for it. This year we will be changing the format slightly and will be going for more fun on the night. More on this later.

Grand Final Day
The A team grand finals will be held at Moorabbin on Sunday 12th September. The final games will be held all day. Some volunteers will be required to assist on the day in food preparation and donation of cakes for afternoon teas for officials. If you can help out on the culinary side please see Sue Beckmann or Tina Ashworth.

Enough of the whinging. Lets get behind the kids for the last few weeks and finish the season off well. Keep selling those raffle tickets – it’s for your benefit.

Peter Morphet – President
