MENS SECTION REPORT
My School Headmaster used to say that everything had a Start, Middle and an End. In that case after Round-7 were now at the end of the Start, and the start of the Middle. We need to keep working hard through the Middle, so that were well placed at the start of the End, to end up successful at the end of the End. School was a very confusing place.
The Mens Section is well placed after Round-7. The current standings (SL2 3rd, PA 4th, PC 2nd, M1 5th, M2 2nd, M3 6th, M4 3rd) reflect a strong section, with excellent depth. Statistics can always be a bit misleading State League has had a few disappointing results whereas Pennant-A has performed consistently strongly. The challenge now is to maintain or improve our positions through the colder months, and set ourselves up for a strong finish.
The middle months are an opportunity for the tough to get going. Get along to training put in the hard yards and get the rewards. Training numbers for State League and Pennant teams have remained strong over the past few weeks, but Metro training numbers are just starting to wane.
We have had our share of injuries in the top couple of teams, throughout the early part of the season. (Blake Over, Andrew Layzell, Walker, James, Hunter) This has a natural flow-down effect to the other grades. Paul Beckman and his Captains and Managers have done a great job getting by with numbers during this period. Its good to see David Abrahams back adding some strength to the Metro grades. This has also given some young guys an opportunity for experience and to cement their positions. Speaking of which it was good to see Ben Verney back in State League after a long absence the two goals in his comeback game were celebrated with customary flair.

JUNIOR SECTION REPORT
A note from the President
A belated welcome to everybody for season 1999 especially
our new members and parents. We have had a mixed bag of results
so far but everybody is putting in every week. We still need
under 11 and under 13 girls to strengthen these age groups and
are still desperately in need of under 11south and under 15 south
coaches for the year. Please put your hand up and help not only
the kids in these teams but also the whole club.
Teams focus - Under 13 Girls
With a team of birtual novices we have had a hard start
to the season. Stacey, Jess M, Jess N, Justine and Joanne have
had to play out their regular positions. We have been working
hard to bring in our new members Emily, Lauren, Mary and Mallory.
Thanks to Stacey for putting on the pads and to our under 11
girls Belinda, Bron and Danielle for filling the team so ably.
A day trip to Reservoir
Earlier this season the intrepid Carnival organiser
Campbell Smythe sent two 6 @ side U13 teams to the annual
Reservoir carnival. Off they went, sort of organised and with
some parents along to look after them. They arrived at sunny
reservoir, after a comfortable drive to the country, eager for a
days play of hockey in the special carnival organised just for
their age group. A great day was planned with assurances that
this carnival was FUN. Many activities had been promised and
plenty of time to enjoy the jumping castles, face painting and
all the other fun things happening.
The slightly jaded but still keen parents piled the kids out of the cars and proceeded to check out the draw for the days games. Polite cuiosity quickly turned to shock and horror when Rosemary Neil and Gary Johnston (who were not nominated parents in charge) realised that the two teams were indeed nominated but they were not 6 @ side but 11 @ side. A quick panicked phone call wakened Campbell who had the previous night hosted an 18th cocktail party so was perhaps not firing on all cylinders who then assured Rosemary that he was confident she could handle the slight glitch in proceedings.
A short discussion was held amongst the kids and it was decided to play on regardless and concentrate on Team 2 doing will but poor Team 1 would just play out the games conserving as much energy as possible. Well the tactics worked with Team 2 reaching the final. One wonders if we could have stretched ourselves a little further to actually play ourselves in the final and of course win. Too much to ask, you think ?
To finish off, Team 2 lost a hard fought final 1-0 to Greensborough with Moorabbin players winning both the player of the carnival awards.
Female player of the tournament - Traleen Neil
Male player of the tournament - Andrew Johnston
Congratulations to the kids who played so many games and had such good results and to the parents who helped and supervised the kids. Also a special thank you to younger brothers and sisters who helped out with numbers. I was assured the kids had an absolutely fabulous time and enjoyed the rides, show bags and treats that Reservoir put on for them and I am sure Campell will be organinsing another couple of teams for next year.
