Note on our canteen:

I mentioned in the last Jetsetter, that the junior section and more particularly the Smyth family, had taken on the responsibility of running the canteen this year with the goal to reinvent it as a profit centre of the club.

We want to bring you up to date with the great progress so far:
Totally new range of fresh and healthy food on offer.
Wider range of drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
Working towards serving both food/drinks inside the hall on an ongoing basis with the aim to have all club members using our facilities more frequently.
Turnover and profits already up significantly on previous years which is a clear message people are all very happy with the product on offer.

It’s a great start to the year for all concerned and to keep this momentum up we need your help in 2 areas.

Please support the canteen whenever you are at the club, our product and pricing is competitive with any local alternative.
AND
We need all members to be prepared to help out when necessary serving behind the counter. You will not be formally rostered on to be involved, but please be prepared to help in any way you can whenever you’re down at the club. Remember that we are all working towards the common goal of resurfacing our grounds this coming summer.

Thanks in advance

MEN’S SECTION REPORT

At the time of writing, the Men’s Section has got the top three teams in the four, another side undefeated (M3S), a record number of young players contributing at all levels, and when we get players to the games we’re very competitive in seven different grades. Given all this strength, depth and youth; we should be very positive about the future.

WRONG

Organisation on the field will lead to success. Organisation off the field is the foundation that allows any success to occur. Our organisation off the field is unacceptably poor, is left to far too few, and will limit our on-field success considerably into the future.

I’ve been involved with two other sporting clubs that went through the same evolution: Plenty of on-field success – Limited administration – Continued on-field success – Fewer administrators doing all the work – Relative on-field success – Reliance on the over burdened few – Declining on-field success – The over burdened few pull out – total decline of club. At the risk of being the profit of doom, I believe we are three parts of the way through this standard model in the Men’s section.

IT’S TIME

It’s time to put your hand up if you want the Men’s Section to prosper. There will be a meeting at the club of those interested in helping out in any small capacity with the running of the Men’s Section on Wednesday 24th May at 7:30pm. I ask that you give serious consideration to your ability to assist and your commitment to the success of the Men’s Section.

Men’s Section Coordinator

WOMEN’S SECTION REPORT

With Round 6 just completed we are one third of the way through the season. I suppose it is time to reflect on how we are travelling. As and entity the women’s section seems to be functioning well with some new volunteers putting up their hands to spread the workload across the club. Uniforms are in the capable hands of Lisa Dempster and Jane Alcorn – so any requirements on the uniform side please contact them. Selection has been well attended by all representatives and hopefully we are getting the best teams on the park each week. If you are unavailable it is imperative that team captains are advised so replacements can be made. I have done a report on the teams so far this year and if you have any information to impart please contact me and I will endeavour to get it in the newsletter. State League recorded their first win of the season in Round 5 against a highly fancied Hawthorn team. This win was a major upset in Hawthorns plans and with the shoreline 3 – 0 to Moorabbin it just shows that if everything can come together on the day positive results can happen. Erin has been quietly confident that we could perform well and has stuck to her game plan with fruition coming at last. The girls fought hard all day and the scoring opportunities were limited. Half time was 1 – 0 to Moorabbin and even though the girls only penetrated the circle 3 times in the second half they scored 2 goals. After taking the stats during the second half it was surprising to see the opportunities lost in defence and those taken in attack. The State League followed up this win with another this week against a weaker TEMS team overpowering them and giving a strong display 4 –2. I hope they continue on and strengthen during the rest of the season as they have now proved themselves winners. Pennant A are travelling on very well not as yet recording any wins but certainly being able to produce some fine hockey. They went down fighting 1 – 0 to a strong TEMS team and have produced close games in all matches. As the team settles down during the season I feel a win is just around the corner. Pennant B has recorded their first win against Hawthorn 2 – 1. They have a hard road to travel this year with an unfriendly draw and their allocation of umpires has not been the best. It is hard to play a high standard of hockey with poor and inexperienced umpires. I’m sure this group of experienced players will be able to overcome these problems and record more wins during the season.
Now we move on to our Div 2 and 3 teams. D2 has won two of their games and also recorded a draw. They seem to be travelling along nicely even though social life seems to have gone out the door with some tough time slots to play in. But as usual they just get on with the job and are probably doing the best of all teams at the moment. Div 3 had their first win against TEMS 1 – 0 and are playing very well with unfortunately being in the winning position but not being able to convert this to three points. They have lost 2 –1 in four games so hopefully these score lines will be reversed from now on. Hear me Girls!!!!
Just a bit of news for Vet Ladies nomination forms are in the Fixture book and if you have any questions please contact you’re Rep – Jane Alcorn.

JUNIOR SECTION REPORT

The season is Team’s Progress.
After 4 round of Junior Hockey with a two week break in the middle, it all seems as though we have just started. When we come back to reality we still have a long way to go. Nearly all of our teams are performing extremely well. Our 3 Under 15 teams are all on top of the ladder, our 2 Under 13 boys teams are on top of the ladder and our Under 13 girls team is 4th. This is probably the best result of the lot, an under “girled team” last year that didn’t win a match, great to see.
Our Under 17 A boys team is 8th, our Under 17 A girls team is 8th and our Under 17 girls South team 6th. Our Under 11 A team is 9th. To all the Teams, keep up the good work and lets make the rest of the season even better.
As mentioned in an earlier edition, we are in urgent need of Under 11 players; this is the future of our Club.

New Players
Speak to your friends and convince them to play Hockey for Moorabbin. We are still in need of a few more players for the most age groups especially Under 9’s and Under 11’s. These groups are the lifeblood of our Club and we must have players in these age groups. The more the merrier. Ask around all your friends and get them to contact Peter Morphet on 9578 3484 if they have any questions.

Fees are now Overdue!
If your fees have not been received by May 1, a $10.00 surcharge will be added to your fees and an Invoice will be sent during May. There are still a few players that have not paid any fees or contacted Sue McIvor, our Treasurer with a reason. The Club needs money to run, it is not fair that the non-payers, get the benefits, as do the prompt payers. Should any parent have financial difficulties or wish to discuss their fees, please contact Sue McIvor on 9580 3486 at home or 9676 5551 at work.
Please forward your fees to our Treasurer: Sue McIvor at 19 Melrose Street, Mordialloc. 3195.
DO NOT LEAVE ANY MONEY IN THE CASH TIN IN THE CANTEEN!!

State and Regional Teams.
Congratulations to the following Junior players for making a State or Regional team so far this year: For any queries, please contact Tina Ashworth on 9583.3551.
Under 18 Women’s State -
Lauren Stevenson (Goalkeeper)
Under 18 Women’s RegionaI -

Under 16 VSSSA Girls State -
Alisia Simmons, Sarah Ashworth
Under 16 VJHA Girls State -
Traleen Neil
Under 15 VJHA Boys State -
Brett Dempster, Ian Smyth, Brent Scales, Stephen Stuart

Junior Fixture Book.
Due to the constant withdrawal of Junior teams over the first couple of rounds, the VJHA only issue the first 4 rounds a week at a time. We are hoping that everyone will have a completed fixture book by round 5.

Canteen.
Thanks to Campbell and Ella Smyth we have an extremely well stocked and run canteen. A paid person who has been doing a fantastic job is running our canteen on a Friday night and all weekend. Fiona Simmons and Jodi Smyth are doing a great job behind the counter. This has eliminated the need for parents to be rostered to work in the canteen during these hours. However, we still have a few busy periods when help is required. If you would like to get warm and help behind the counter, I’m sure you will be greatly appreciated. Give it a go!!

Team Photo.
The committee would like any parent interested in taking team photos on a casual basis this season to contact Gary Simmons on 0429 403059. We have decided to go away from the formal style of photo and take a photo at a game or training.

A creditable result to date. We survived the dreaded school holidays and Easter break without losing too many players. Our player depth came to the forefront with only one occasion where we played short.
State selections to be played in Darwin July 10 - 22:

Congratulations to all.

Whilst we expect our seconds and thirds to play finals hockey our firsts continue to battle through their first foray in A grade for some time. We missed an opportunity against Yarra to win when they played with 10 – one of those nights where we camped in our attacking half but could not score and they made the most of every chance. On the other hand TEM turned up short after Easter and we hammered them 8-3. A win we certainly did not count on at the start of the year.
