MEN’S SECTION REPORT

What a tremendous start to the season – SEVEN TEAMS for SEVEN WINS.

Congratulations to all those involved. This is a particularly impressive feat since we entered an extra team this year. Special mention should go to Paul Beckmannwho as the Metro Coordinator has pulled together a number of new players, arranged training and practice matches, and organised the teams. John Purcell and Doug Hopkins have also done particularly well with the pre-season for the State League and Pennant squads. Well Done!

Obviously a season isn’t made up of one round, and the hard part is to keep going.

Thanks also to Ken Walker for taking on the role as Chairman of Selectors. Ken Walker, John Purcell and Doug Hopkins will select State League and Pennant teams. Paul Beckman and respective captains will select the Metro teams.

Thank-you

Thank you to all those who turned up to the Working Bee. A job well done. Your efforts have certainly improved the look of our ground and facility. Ron Noe also asked me to pass on his thanks.

Thank you to Cmapbell and Ella Smyth for their magnificent efforts in providing hot roast beef and pork rolls, and chips, Friday-Saturday-Sunday of Round-1. It was a super effort. Thanks also to Marilyn Benjamin and Tina Ashworth for helping out. This was a really well received initiative by everybody. The only slight criticism I heard was a "lack of gravy".

Welcome to new players this season:

We also have a number of juniors playing seniors for the first time this year:

Brad O’Brien and Peter Morphett have also joined their sons in Metro 3.

Initial grading of players has been made and each has been allocated to a team according to their skill level and availability. If you have any query about your selection please contact Paul Beckmann to discuss and resolve.

We had a great start to the season with all sides recording a win. Training numbers are around 20 players regularly attending that should lead to further strong on field performances.

JEFFERSON FORD - CLUB SPONSOR 1999

The Moorabbin Jets are pleased to announce Jefferson Ford (Mentone) as our 1999 Club Sponsor.

Simon Jefferson and his team have been Melbourne’s leading Ford dealer for many years and are located at 58 Nepean Highway Mentone. Simon Jefferson is renowned for his competitive deals on New and Used Fords together with a large range of other used cars, giving rise to the advertising catch cry that he is "The greatest car dealer in the free world".

Both Jefferson Ford and the Jets believe that this relationship can deliver great benefit to both our club and Jefferson Ford during this year and in years to come.

The building of this relationship will not happen as a matter of course. Let’s all get behind Jefferson Ford and make them our first port of call when looking for either a new or used Ford or any other used car. When you do, let them know you’re a member of the club or a family member associated with our club. Simon has agreed to make a donation to our club for every car purchased from his yard by someone with an association with our club.

As you are all aware, our club will be conducting 1999’s major fundraiser in the form of a raffle from June through September this year. The major prize will be a Chilli red Ford Festiva (with air and on roads) donated by Jefferson Ford.

WOMEN’S SECTION REPORT

The girls in the top two sides have put a lot of work into their pre-season training this year. There were a lot of people turning up to each session, and as a whole the group is fitter at this stage of the season than we have been for a good few years. This is largely thanks to Glen enlisting Bob Puke to draw up a fitness program. This took us from December last year to the start of the season. Those people who followed it have reaped the benefits.

The Portsea camp marked the start of the pre-season team activities. It brought the junior and senior groups of payers together to get to know each other a little better. Although at times it was hard work, and we didn’t get much sleep, we all came away from it having enjoyed ourselves.

The first round of matches saw a disappointing start to the season for the Women’s section. We were unable to unveil our new shirts in front of our home crowd, and both League 1 and District 1 were beaten 2-1 by Box Hill/Kew and Camberwell respectively. District 2 fared slightly better drawing with Box Hill/Kew 1-1. District 3 had our only win for the week end beating Box Hill/Kew 2-0. District 4 lost 2-0 to Caulfield. There is a long way to go before the end of the season, and a lot of work to be done, but come to training, get to know your team mates, and have some fun. The encouraging thing to see at the moment is the number of promising young players we have in all our teams this season!

This year there are a few changes to the administration of our competition. The M.W.H.A. which is the body that ran our competition has been wound up and taken over by the V.W.H.A. (Victorian Women’s Hockey Association.) This brings Victoria into line with the rest of Australia. The body that now runs our competition is called the V.W.H.A. Metropolitan Competition Committee. At the moment not a lot has changed in the way things are done, but it is all under the one body.

There are some rule changes this year.

On another administrative note, please check with your team Captain/Manager that the details we have for you are correct. Please make any alterations to the player list held by your team Captain/Manager so they can pass them on to me.

JUNIOR SECTION REPORT

The 1999 season kicked off with a hearty beef roll and a bucket of chips at the club on Friday the 17th compliments of Campbell Smyth and team. We had mixed results in the junior section with 4 wins, 7 losses and a draw. Good luck for next week and the rest of the season.
