EXECUTIVE
REPORT
This Newsletter is designed to provide you with a menu of information that will help you get the maximum out of our club this year. If there is anything important to you not covered in this document please contact either the club secretary, Ian Fraser, or the communications committee both contact number are listed inside.
The Club executive sat down in September of last year to commence an ongoing process of re-organising each of our administration areas. We started this process for two major reasons:
In terms of defining success over the coming months we will be publishing our short, medium, long term club goals and mission statement to enable you to measure the clubs progress in areas such as on field results, developing talented hockey players, enjoyable club social life and sound financial management.
In re-organising the executive administration
our first step has been to put in place a committee to run each
of the different functions within the club, (adopting the many
hands make light work philosophy). We now have groups of people
running the following:
Each of these groups has a specific set of goals and objectives they want to achieve both in 1999 and beyond, and I would like to thank all of those involved in advance for their efforts and invite anyone else who may be interested in helping to contact the relevant group leaders.
I mentioned earlier that our playing surface will need to be replaced sometime over the next 12-24 months. The executive has been working very hard in conjunction with the city of Kingston to ensure this happens as smoothly and favourably for the club as possible.
Our goal is to replace the current ground with
a waterfilled surface. To achieve this we are going to need the
help and commitment of every club member. At present we have
approximately $90,000 in our ground replacement fund, we aim to
have a minimum of $150,000 saved by this seasons end. To achieve
this the following fundraising targets have been set for 1999:
The people running each of these areas are at present designing a range of ways to achieve these targets for the club which will be further explained in the following pages. Please help us to help you this year, if we all support these committees efforts we will all be rewarded when we achieve our goal.
I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of the executive to introduce you to our new club name:
THE MOORABBIN JETS
Our New Club Motto is:
SURGITE VINCERE OMNES
RISE TO CONQUER ALL
And Our New Club Logo is:

We are currently developing training gear, caps, t-shirts etc with our new logo for all members to purchase (well let you know when it is ready) and we will have a patch to be put on every playing shirt ready prior to the season.
Good Luck for the 1999 season and lets all enjoy the spoils.

MENS SECTION REPORT
Im really looking forward to the 1999 season.
I expect we will have success at many levels on the field, and a number of off-field aspects of the club are shaping up particularly well for the first time in many years. If organisation has anything to do with success, 1999 will be a great year.
Preseason for State League and Pennant-A has been going since the beginning of the year. A large number of players have attended at various times, but it would be good to see a more consistent attendance. The rewards are definitely there for the State League team this year, if the players put in the effort.
Additional Team
We have entered an additional team this year to cater for the growth in player numbers. There are a number of players returning to play hockey from previous years, as well players coming out of the Junior section, and a few new players to Moorabbin. This gives us a wide variety of grades: State League 2, Pennant-A, Pennant-C, Metro-1, Metro-2, Metro-3 and Metro-4.
Pennant-C and Metro Pre-Season
With the greater depth in our teams this year, and in particular with the envisaged strength in the middle grades, we have decided to offer an earlier start to training for the Pennant-C and Metro grades. Traditionally these players would not have stated pre-season until a week or two before the season, we are hoping that a number of Pennant-C and Metro players would like to start earlier. The following Pennant-C and Metro preseason times have been booked:
Sunday 7/3/99 4:30pm 5:30pm
Thursday 11/3/99 7:00pm 8:00pm
Sunday 14/3/99 4:30pm 5:30pm
Thursday 18/3/99 7:00pm 8:00pm
Sunday 21/3/99 4:30pm 5:30pm
Thursday 25/3/99 7:00pm 8:00pm
Sunday 28/3/99 4:30pm 5:30pm
EASTER BREAK
Normal Tuesday/Thursday training starts Thursday after Easter
Season Starts
The season starts on the weekend 17th/18th April two weeks after Easter. We would hope to have practice matches for most teams on the previous weekend.
Mens Section Training Times
Effective after Easter:
Tuesdays State League & Pennant 8:00pm 9:00pm
Thursdays State League & Pennant 7:00pm 8:00pm
All Metro 7:00pm 8:00pm
Yes Thats Right Everybody will train from 7:00pm 8:00pm on Thursday nights. Hopefully this will not only attract more to training but also have the double benefit of getting people together a bit more. Hang around and have a drink and something to eat after training.
Team Captains and Managers
We are looking to have a Team Captain and a Team Manager for each team this year. Hopefully this will spread the load a little from previous years, and assist us in further strengthening the organisation of the section. Please see Paul Beckmann if you would like to assist in these areas.

Mens Pre-Season So Far
The 1999 pre-season actually started back in December of last year with a couple of fitness sessions at the King Club in Sandringham. Although numbers were somewhat disappointing those that did attend were treated to a strenuous workout.
Early in January the training started in earnest with regular Thursday night sessions resuming at the King Club. With the club primarily used as a base, runs have included varying distances and locations. With short jogs to Bluff Road, hill climbs at Shipston Reserve and beach runs around Half Moon Bay , boredom has not been a problem. These Thursday fitness sessions have been conducted at times in punishing heat and the half hour swimming time afterward has probably kept a few people coming back. More recently the training shifted to the athletic track in Mentone where Doug Hopkins conducted another worthwhile hour of running designed to help us maintain a level for an extended period. Apparently the gale force winds on the night were purely coincidental.
While all this was happening Sunday training was in full swing with some time being devoted to fitness work such as "beep" tests and the occasional Parkdale "snakes & ladders" runs. But the fact remains we are all here to play hockey and are surely enjoying getting the sticks back in our hands and running around the ground again. Those attending regularly are getting the touch back and will obviously have a huge start on those yet to show. With the basic skills now showing improvement its great to see them being used as intended in the game situations we are now moving into.
Finally, with intra-club and inter-club practice matches about to commence it is vital that many of those missing faces be encouraged to get down to the ground and into training as soon as possible. People such as Steve Maguire, Matt Brown and Cameron Hunter are proof of the progress that can be made if we apply ourselves to a task and these players are setting the standards that relative newcomers like Rob Graham and Mark Tesararo need to achieve.

Good luck to John Purcell for season 1999. If commitment means anything he is destined for success this year, provided he is given the support required from all of us.

There are still jobs that require people to do them. If you are approached to help around the club this year, please try and assist us in any way you can. The success of our club depends on the people within it.
We need volunteers to act as Team Managers. Anyone can do this job, players, husbands, parents, friends, etc. There will be a "team kit" for each grade that will explain what the manager has to do.
We also need two delegates for MWHA meetings. These are held one Monday night a month at the YWCA in Elizabeth St. All you have to do is attend the meetings, then pass the relevant material back to the club.
I look forward to seeing you all both on and off the field,
Lee Beet
Women's Section Co-ordinator.
Womens Pre-Season So Far
The women sections pre-season campaign was kick started on the 13th/14th of February with some members attending a weekend training camp at Portsea. The weekend combined some fitness work, with some enlightening methods on focusing and relaxing courtesy of a session of Yoga, and of course some socializing to provide an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all those that attended.
It was a good opportunity to get to know other members of the womens section better and to get an idea of where we all see Moorabbin Hockey Club going this season. Many thanks for the Brown familys generosity as their beach house provided the ideal setting for the weekend.
Now the pre-season campaign continues with a program designed by Bob Puki (Julies husband) aimed at significantly improving everyones fitness levels ready for the start of the season. The training schedule is varied and interesting and Im sure it will be rewarding. Anyone who does not have the relevant information about training sessions and wishes to attend please contact Glen Jackson on 9533-6703.

JUNIOR SECTION REPORT
UMPIRING
If there are any juniors who would like to get involved in learning to umpire this year, could you please get in touch with Peter Morphet (9578-3484). We dont have a game if we havent got UMPIRES!
ATTENTION FUTURE COACHES.
The junior section could still do with some help with coaching this season. Its not a big commitment and the rewards are great when you see the children develop their hockey skills as the season progresses. You will get full support from the junior committee and the parents the club will also assist in any accreditations you wish to aspire to.
The juniors are also hoping to develop teams in the Local Primary Schools to compete in the Victorian Hockey 7s Competition. We are after some volunteers who could adopt a school and develop a hockey team. If you are a student that has some free time during the week and you have a good knowledge of hockey. Im sure this would be a rewarding experience for you and the children, you never know what talent you might uncover!
For more information, Please ring
Peter Morphet on 9578-3484 or 0413-947020.
Registrations For season 1999.
Welcome to Season 1999! The Junior Committee hope that all club members and their families had a happy Christmas and 1999 brings good health, happiness and prosperity.
Your Committee has decided to eliminate Registration Day due to the success of doing all Registrations by post last year. This year we are in a very fortunate position, in most Age Groups to have an excess of players. WE are therefore offering places in all terms on a, "First In First Served Basis". We suggest that this form is filled out and sent back to the appropriate people immediately, so as not to be disappointed if there are no vacancies in your Age Group. A phone call to Sue Beckmann, will confirm your position for 1999, Phone: 9551-5046.

TREASURERS REPORT
The results for the 1998 year, a loss of $24,257 (1997 - $6397) are probably the worst in the Club's history. On the positive side, the Club remains in a very strong financial position, and resolving the underlying problems should require very little effort.
The principal reasons for the result were
A decline in subscriptions, mainly in
connection with writing off uncollectable debts, and a high
acceptance of early payment discounts
A loss of the Club's major sponsor
Losses from social activities
A decline in canteen patronage
Nevertheless, the prognosis for next year is good. As the synthetic surface has been fully depreciated, the loan now paid off, and the final charge from the City of Kingston incurred, significant cost reductions will occur. Provided we are sensible in setting the level of subscriptions, and stem the losses from social activities, a good performance is assured.

FUND RAISER & ADVERTISINING/SPONSORSHIP
The imminent replacement of our artificial playing surface at Farm Road requires a very significant financial commitment from all members of the MDHC and their families.
Given that the club is budgeting to achieve a profit from operations in 1999. It will be necessary for us to generate significant income via sponsorship, fund-raising and other activity during 1999 and into the future.
For that reason, as a starting point, the club has set interim 1999 revenue targets for sponsorship of $5,000 and a Fund-raising Special effort of $10,000.
Fund-raising Special effort
The club proposes to conduct a major raffle over a 5 month period to be drawn on the MDHC Senior Presentation night in October. At this stage it is proposed that the major prize will be a small car with 5 other smaller (though still valuable) prizes.
As it is extremely unlikely that a car dealership will donate a car, the club is going to have to assume the risk associated with purchasing the car, albeit at a cheaper cost than the normal retail price. For this reason, the club will not commit itself to this major event and associated investment unless the executive is convinced that MDHC members and families are committed to supporting the initiative.
The club executive plans to telephone a randomly selected 20% sample of the clubs members and families over the next week with a view to determining the members preparedness to support this initiative. I therefore urge you to consider the above and the information below so that you can form a view as to your preparedness or otherwise to support this important fund-raiser.
At this stage we propose asking each individual playing member (and family) to commit to selling a minimum number of tickets. These minimum targets we project as being:-
Senior/Veteran Member (including under
17s) 50 * $2 tickets Total value $100
Family with 1 junior member (U15,U13,U11,U9) 50 * $2 tickets
Total value $100
Family with 2 junior members 75 * $2 tickets Total value $150
Family with 3 or more junior members 100 * $2 tickets Total value
$200
To put the above into perspective, if you were responsible for selling 50 tickets through the 5 month (22 week) period, you would need to sell only two and a half tickets per week. We expect that a lot of members and their families will sell considerably more than their initial allocation.
We look forward to gathering your feedback over the next week.
Advertising & Sponsorship
In past years, MDHC has not had a formalised approach to gathering Advertising and Sponsorship revenue. For that reason, we are currently preparing a simple plan to ensure that the club maximises its share of grassroots sporting sponsorship dollars on a sustainable (over a number of years) basis.
This plan, incorporating the mechanics of the advertising and sponsorship packages available will be distributed to all club members during March.
In the interim, if anybody has any queries related to advertising and sponsorship could they please call me at home on (03) 9530 6415 or at work on (03) 9252 3702.

SPECIAL PROJECT
PICTORIAL HISTORY OF MOORABBIN DISTRICT HOCKEY CLUB.
Our Club has decided to create a permanent pictorial history, to be displayed in the main Clubroom.
Its purposes are:
Organising Committee.
At present, Murray Macaulay, Graeme Morris, Gwen Leary and Ken Walker have agreed to assist. We have others being contacted and, hopefully, this notice will stimulate more interest.
How You Can Help.
We particularly need old photographs of players, singly or in teams, which could be copied. Our intention is to guarantee the return of originals to owners within a fortnight.
We are also interested in news clippings, old uniforms, audio, film or videotapes, pennants, flags or even trophies, which may be sitting at home. The committee will guarantee the owners wishes will be carried out. That is, for example, some people may wish the club to display an item on a permanent basis. Please complete and return the Response Form.
Collection Process.
Because this notice is going to many people who now have little to do within the club, we will collect items where it is convenient to deliver them to the club.
Otherwise loans of gifts may be made as follows: -

UNIFORM UPDATE
The executive committee has decided that this year the State League Squads (Top 2 teams for both Mens and Womens) for 1999 will play in new uniforms, in anticipation that for the year 2000 all of the club members will go to the new uniforms.
A committee was formed for the new uniforms and several samples were made up of different styles of playing shirts. These were then shown to people over the summer competition and then the executive committee voted on a particular style. The style consist of Sky blue and Maroon.
CANTEEN
The Club has, for many years, had a very solid contribution to its overall turnover from the canteen at our ground. We would like to thank Ron Noe and Gwen Leary in particular for their continuing efforts in this area.
The executive has significantly increased the canteens budgeted goals in 1999 (see executive report), and as such are currently looking at various ways and means to achieve these increased results.
We are open to any suggestions you would like to make on how we may improve the facility, and we are also very interested in talking to people who may be interested in being involved in participating in the organisation, and or running of the canteen in 1999.
