The centre of the logo is the Cross - the symbol of how far God was prepared to go to show love for humanity. Without the cross there would be no resurrection, and so for us, without dying to ourselves there is no joyous rising to the hope and new life of the Risen Christ. We continue to live and proclaim the cross and resurrection of Jesus 'in season and out of season'.
The colours that make up this cross have been carefully selected. Gold for the rising of the sun. Red for the earth as depicted in the Aboriginal flag. Both of these colours indicate God's presence in this ancient land.
The other colours - red, white, blue and green - come from the flags of Australia, Austria, Ireland, Vietnam and the United Nations. All these colours, and the stories behind them, represent the cultural and geographical diversity of the Australian Province. They come together to indicate how we strive to be one in the mission of Christ.
The cross bar bears the Jesuit name and indicates our mission. As Jesuits we are commissioned to take our experience of the mystery of God and work for the 'realisation of the Kingdom of God in the whole of human society, not only in the life to come, but in this life as well' (34th General Congregation).
The motto, 'We have no other boast than the Cross' indicates the gift of humility and service that we strive to embody. All of us, both Jesuits and lay, contribute to the work of Christ in and through the mission of the Church. So then our only boast in this coming Sesquicentennial year, as in every year, is about giving glory 'to him who can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus our Lord.' (Ephesians 3: 20-21)
