THE LENTEN CHALLENGE
Almost 2000 people got the first seminars in the Uniya Lenten Series off to a great start. The Governor General, Sir William Deane, opened proceedings in Melbourne on Ash Wdnesday, and the seminar continued the following night in Sydney.
Addressing the topic of Australian values, former Chief Justice of the High Court, Sir Gerard Brennan, strongly challenged directions Australian society was taking and questioned the approach of the Australian Catholic hierarchy. The editor of Eureka Street, Morag Fraser followed with a hard-hitting assessment that took an extract from Tim Winton as its point of departure.
Prepared comments and questions were then made by experts from various fields, including Sir Gus Nossal, Hugh Mackay, as well as students from catholic colleges. After responses by the speakers, questions were taken from the floor, then a final reflection was given by the poet, Fr Peter Steele SJ.
Key speakers at the next seminar - Personal well-being and social conscience - are Dr Patricia Brennan, Professor Kevin Hart and Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ.
MORE EVENTS
Final details of the Australian lecture series of ethicist Jim Keenan SJ, and some details of the visit of Christopher Willcock SJ to Perth are now included in the events page.
MANY JESUITS GATHER IN SYDNEY
More than 160 Australian Jesuits came together from as far afield as Nigeria, Rome and Boston over the New Year period to meet and relax together in Sydney. Many former members of the order joined them for a New Year's Eve celebration in what was a highlight of the 6-day gathering.
THE FIRST WEEK
One hundred and fifty is just a number, and that many years is well beyond our own experience. The welcome presence of the Austrian Jesuit Provincial, Fr Alois Riedlsperger SJ, has provided the beginning of the sesquicentennial year with a tangible meaning, reminding both provinces of shared blessings.
