| For those who just want to have FUN!
CHASSIS:
Tubular steel spaceframe. Roll bar size and material is as per
CAMS specs - the whole car is actually very strong and overbuilt - it is
also very neutral to drive - very little under or over steer. Seat
belts are currently 4 point anchored with provision for a 5th point - drivers
report feeling very snug.
The suspension is full race style uneven wishbones - giving a low and
controlled roll centre with fully "rose-jointed" wishbones and steering. The
front suspension is unique - it is a single shock rocker setup pushed from
both ends - a large anti-roll bar is activated by the 2 drop links shown
on each side. The rear is a rocker style as well with the shockers
mounted one in front of the other with the roll bar operated by short torque
tubes then drop links as at the front.
Braking is achieved by custom made 250mm cast iron discs with modified
4 piston
calipers off a Kawasaki ZZR1100 with a variable front/rear bais adjustment
.
ENGINE:
Honda CBR1100-XX Super Blackbird motorcycle, including the standard
clutch and six speed sequential transmission currently driving an open
centre diff. Standard power output is around 145hp but this can be
modified to exceed 200hp without too much effort.
DRIVE IMPRESSIONS:
It is fun, fun ,fun to drive! The feeling of speed is incredible,
consider that at 320 kg the Drysdale-Honda inlcuding driver weighs about
the same as the Honda Blackbird bike (up untill very recently the fastest
production motorcycle in the world) with a rider and pillion. Add
to this that the drive is via two 8 inch slicks and braking is with these
plus 7 inch slicks on the front and you can get some idea of the G-forces
generated. To give you some idea of it's performance, with no bodywork
for streamlining, no lock diff and a stock motor, the Drysdale-Honda on
it's first test was faster around Calder Park raceway than a well
sorted Formula Ford and it was driven to second in class on it's first
competition outing at the first round of the Victorian Hillclimb Championships
- driven by reigning Australian Formula 3 champion Paul Stevenson (still
with no down force or lock diff) .
With no cush drive in the transmission and fully rose-jointed steering
and suspension the Drysdale-Honda feels very taunt and tight - not at all
like a road car. The sensation of this sort of power to weight ratio
is common on a bike but it is an unusual sensation to have a seat
pushing in your back like this - all this with a stock standard motor.
Power is about 145 hp at the moment with another 60 hp expected from a
fully-prepped motor. Now that will be fun!
The photos shown here are obviously not the finished article- the intention
is for the bodywork to fill in between the wheels so that 2 cars dicing
for position can't touch tyres and flip over.
