This first edition of Between Friends for 1995 heralds a new and enthusiastic committee of Executive Officers, who were elected at the Annual General Meeting in December 1994. This weekend at Buchan is reported by Peter Ackroyd in the feature article.
The $2 yearly membership for 1995 became due at the AGM, so if you have received a reminder with this newsletter, please pay up and continue to support the Friends!
Just to keep everyone thinking about the role of the Friends, I have provided an outline of our aims, and a description of the major projects currently underway.
The Friends wish to welcome Alan Oldroyd in the position of Ranger-in-charge at Buchan, replacing Graham Parkes. We hope the relationship between the Friends and the Department continues to flourish.
This edition also contains the all-important calendar of events for 1995. Please consider attending as many of these as possible. Those who regularly show up, including myself, know the enjoyment and satisfaction of helping out with the various interesting projects in which we are involved.
Glenn Baddeley, Editor
This coming weekend will include some maintenance on the recently
planted trees and the removal of weeds at the Potholes revegetation plot and in
a small area of the Caves Reserve above the swimming pool.
Work will also be carried out in Fairy Cave related to the re-routing
of electrical wiring. Some landscaping will also be done around the toilets at
the Fairy Cave car park and near the swimming pool. The interpretation
signs project will also receive consideration.
The weather should be nice, the tea pot will be hot, and the company
enjoyable. Contact Mick Adler for details. See you there!
The bees will be busy

The Friends usually get together on five weekends a year. The number of volunteer labourers ranges from just a few to literally dozens. Work is carried out on various projects related to the Caves Reserves at and around Buchan, which are managed by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Some unscheduled work is also done by individuals and small groups.
The fundamental aims of the Friends are to promote public awareness and understanding of caves and cave landscapes, to foster conservation, and to co-operate with the government and relevant authorities to achieve these aims.
A relaxed, fun and interesting time is had by the people who attend the weekend working bees. They always feel gratification from contributing effort and seeing real improvements being made to the caves reserves.
The two major projects currently in progress are:
Over the past couple of years, about 2 hectares of reserve has been excluded from stock by constructing a solar powered electric fence, which includes an access gate. Hundreds of seedlings have been planted, fertilised, and protected using tree guards. Hundreds of weeds have also been removed.
The idea is to gradually return parts of the Potholes from cleared farmland to its former natural coverage of vegetation and ecosystem.
The Friends have an ongoing commitment to maintenance to ensure that the trees will succeed and that the revegetation is a success. In years to come, those who have participated should be able to look proudly on the results.
Six high quality information boards are to be erected within specific areas of the Caves Reserve to explain aspects of the landscape and natural features to the public. This is coordinated by Peter Ackroyd.
There are always other smaller tasks to which the Friends provide volunteer labour.
Possible future projects include expansion of the Potholes revegetation
plot, and redevelopment of the 'Mud Chamber' in Fairy Cave as a
historical display. Other ideas are also being considered.
Contact the membership officer, Jude, and she will gladly take $2
from you, which covers the cost and postage of this newsletter for a calendar
year.

In 1993, the Friends produced a double sided A3 full colour pamphlet
titled Cave dwelling bats of East Gippsland. It contains marvellous
photographs and information about the three species of cave bats in the region.
The pamphlet is for sale at Buchan in the Caves Reserve Kiosk, the General
Store, and at Shades of Death cave. It is also available to the Friends
for the special price of $1. Contact Glenn Baddeley to order your copy.
