Cheaper ShoppingIf the Photoshop's too pricey, your best bet is the Paint Shop. This program from JASC has grown up on the Web, downloaded by countless thousands all over the planet. The most recent version, 4.10, is available free as "trialware", but disables itself after 30 days. You can download an earlier version free, or get the full version by paying $A110 to the program's Australian distributors. It's worth it. All graphics programs have their quirks, but by the standards of the breed, Paint Shop works remarkably well. As well as allowing the usual effects, it supports transparent GIF images, important for smooth page presentation. And its color management outstrips more expensive competitors. Vitally, it includes the 216-color "browser-safe" palette, allowing you to create graphics which won't "dither" (turn into a visible pattern of dots) on 256-color monitors. You can download the trial version of Paint Shop Pro at JASC's site, where you'll also find a useful Web Developer's Forum. Paint Shop also crops up on many shareware disks included with books and magazines such as Australian Personal Computer.
